The Third Annual Long Bay Sprint Triathlon will take place on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at the Huntington Beach State Park located in Murrell’s Inlet, SC. In addition to three miles of beach, much of the park is salt marshes, and that is one of the world’s most productive eco-systems.
I am glad to welcome back Ocean Champions as our 2012 presenting sponsor. Their work continues to inspire my daily life. Waccamaw Landscaping and Construction will also be back for 2012, providing us with equipment necessary to hold a great event. Hammer Nutrition is our 2012 official endurance fuels.
The Long Bay Sprint Triathlon, and it family of events, is pleased to announce it has partnered with Marine Conservation Institute (MCBI). MCBI advocates for the multidisciplinary science of marine conservation biology and for actions that natural and social scientists say are essential to maintain the integrity of life in the sea. Science is central to what MCBI does. MCBI bring scientists together to examine the most important issues in marine conservation. If something isn’t both true and important, MCBI does not advocate for it. That’s not a constraint; it’s what makes MCBI truly effective. MCBI cooperates with researchers, fishermen, conservationists, business people, legislators, government officials, educators, reporters, whoever will help us conserve the oceans’ biodiversity. MCBI believes that marine ecosystem-based management is the way to protect, recover and sustainably use the living sea. MCBI has been instrumental in making the impacts of destructive fishing methods and protection of places in the sea the leading issues on the world’s marine conservation agenda. Our work has already catalyzed protection of vast areas of ocean.
A word from the Race Director
I started racing triathlons at the local level. The races were small and for the most part, I just about knew everyone. It was almost like a family reunion of sorts. During the late 90’s and the early 2000's, I was lucky enough to race a few years in the Ironman circuit, they were also somewhat small. Today, in my opinion, they are a little too large and have lost that family atmosphere.
I originally planned to hold a half iron distance race, at the time, there weren't really any in the area. I wanted to have a race that was small enough that people didn’t get lost in the numbers and one where they would also get recognized for their achievements. After a few years of logistical issues, the LBST was born.
In 2010, I decided to also incorporated environmental awareness as part of the race.
Specifically, our oceans, the mammals that live in them, and what we can do to help.
